It was announced on Facebook that the beloved Winter Carnival that was set to take place Friday Jan. 29 through Sunday Feb. 7, 2021 has been cancelled. "Due to increasing COVID-19 case counts and positivity rates, diminished hospital capacity, and tighter restrictions on public and private gatherings, the McCall Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau has decided to cancel the 2021 McCall Winter Carnival."

"It was an extremely difficult decision and we are deeply disappointed," McCall Area Chamber spokesperson McKenzie Kraemer says. "The McCall Winter Carnival is not only a fun tradition for many people, but it also provides a large economic boost for our local businesses."

A long and fun tradition, this would have been the 56th annual year for the event. Not all fun is lost though, they are still doing their best to provide some of the favorite activities but they will be spread out of a few months instead of all at once, or rather over 10 days like in regular years.

"Our priority has always been the health and safety of our residents and visitors. We could not in good conscience promote an event that would go against current restrictions on public gatherings and COVID-19 safety measures." - the press release continued.

This is my first full winter living here so I have yet to see the Winter Carnival in all of its glory and was really looking forward to it this year, but like many other things, 2020 continues to seem like a giant pause button, at least on a lot of fun activities and concerts. Maybe this will all make us apricate it more. To find more information on safe winter activities, trip ideas and lodging deals, please go to VisitMcCall.org.
