Guitar Ledged, Eddie Van Halen Dies At 65
Eddie Van Halen, guitar ledged who created and led Van Halen into rock heroes, award winners and one of the most respected to and listened to rock bands of all time. He has been fighting a battle with throat cancer that eventually took his life yesterday at a Santa Monica hospital. Eddie Van Halen was 65 years old. His son Wolfgang who was very close with his rock father and played with the band over the last few years, made the announcement on twitter:
"I can't believe I'm having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I've shared with him on and off stage was a gift."
Eddie Van Halen started the band way back in 1972 with his brother Alex, drums, who he remained very close with all the way to the end. It took less than a decade for Van Halen to start showing up in the charts, the fame and hits then kept coming for decades. Van Halen legacy goes far beyond platinum, in fact they are one of the top 20 best-selling artists of all time according to AP News. Van Halen also became Rock and Roll Hall of Famers in 2007. In 2015, Rolling Stone magazine made a list of the top 100 greatest guitarists and Eddie Van Halen got the # 8 spot. Pretty incredible
While the band had some instability with a rotating lead singer spot, Eddie Van Halen and his brother Alex remained with the band and were on 12 studio albums together. Eddie battled with health in recent years, including rehab, tongue cancer, and obviously most recently losing a battle with throat cancer. Through the fame and troubling times, Eddie Van Halen remained extremely close with family.
