Depending on how you look at it, a new bill introduced in Idaho could be really great... or really inconvenient.

Regardless of how you feel, Idaho legislation introduced a bill that could technically extend your lease. How? By adding an extra month to the moving process.

Moving out in Idaho could require more planning or coordinating

Idaho legislation introduced House Bill 169, extending the notice renters must give before vacating a property. According to the statement of purpose:

This legislation provides that renters must have 60 days’ notice before a residential lease terminates. It applies to leases entered into or renewed after July 1, 2023. Title 6 Chapter 6 providing for an expedited eviction in the event of rent not being paid or drugs use continues to apply.

The current law says that renters must only submit a 30-day notice before vacating a property. That would obviously change under House Bill 169.

The Good News

The good news is that if you need more time to transition to your new home, you would now be able to do that under House Bill 169. According to a report from BoiseDev, Rep. John Gannon (D), this bill would make the moving transition easier.

“The goal of this is to get everyone talking so that they have a smooth transition and we don’t have somebody throwing everything into a moving van and moving out 3 days before the lease ends," Gannon said according to BoiseDev.

If you plan ahead and are relatively responsible, this shouldn't be an issue.

The Bad News

For some people, this makes things a little more tricky when planning a move. We all know the housing market in Boise is up and down. When it comes to renting in Boise, the home or unit will typically go to whoever is applied and ready first. That can be frustrating, especially if you need time to make arrangements for your move... like giving a notice that you're vacating a property. There's also the issue of getting stuck paying two rents as your old lease overlaps with your new one.

While 60-day notices are nothing new to some, there are still a lot of people benefitting from the ability to live in places that only require a 30-day notice.
