It’s almost like the tale of the boy who cried wolf with how many times the ‘deadline’ to get a REAL ID has been pushed back, but the new deadline is approaching.

The new form of identification isn’t required for all residents, but it is a good idea to upgrade your ID so you have it if you need it.

What Happens in WA, UT, and ID if You Don’t Get a REAL ID by the Deadline?

The new form of identification goes by a variety of names across the United States, even though they all fall under the same REAL ID rules laid out by the Department of Homeland Security. REAL ID is the name of the law, not the name of the cards issued.

Idaho calls the card a STAR Card, Utah stuck with REAL ID, and Washington is calling it an Enhanced Driver License (EDL) or Enhanced Identification Card (EID).

Each card has the same purpose and required rules for issuing to residents. The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005, has elevated security and documentation standards to help improve government-issued IDs and could help fight identity theft and fraud.

Beginning on May 7th, 2025, a REAL ID-compliant card or other acceptable form of ID will be required to board a commercial plane, enter federal facilities, or access nuclear power plants. You don’t need a REAL ID if your plans don’t include accessing any of those places.

What Do the REAL ID Cards Look Like in Idaho, Utah, and Washington?

Each REAL ID card looks different by state; Utah and Idaho have a gold star in the top right corner, and Washington has the US flag on it and the words ‘Enhanced Driver License’ or ‘Enhanced Identification Card’ across the top.

Some DMV Locations require appointments for REAL ID changes, and others allow walk-in visits. Check your local DMV for the requirements.

So, the good news is that if you don’t have a REAL ID and don’t plan to board a commercial flight or enter a federal facility any time soon, you will be OK not having a new ID by the deadline.
