American health officials have issued a warning to those in the cattle and agriculture industries concerning a highly destructive species of parasitic maggot.

A New World Screwworm warning has been issued to United States ranchers and farmers, and Texas health officials are the first to alert the public to the issue as the agency has released a disaster warning on social media after the screwworm was detected dangerously close to the U.S. border.

'The New World screwworm is not some distant problem. It is a direct and imminent threat to Texas, and we are treating it that way. This is a high-stakes situation for our ranchers, our livestock industry, and our food supply, and we are moving aggressively to stay ahead of it,' said the Texas Department of Agriculture in a recent statement via Meta (and KALB).'

These maggots have the ability to destroy the flesh of anything they come into contact with. Dogs and cats are also at risk as these worms can enter the body through open wounds. Damages from screwworm contamination can extend into the millions of dollars.

There have been no reported cases in Idaho, Utah, or Washington to date. Warning signs of screwworm infestation include painful wounds, bleeding from open sores, and a foul odor from the infection site, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
