Kelly Lang Shows off Her Sexy Side on ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’ [Exclusive Premiere]

From the moment Kelly Lang recorded her cover of the Tina Turner classic “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” she knew she wanted to create a sexy music video to go with it.

The singer-songwriter just wasn’t sure if she actually wanted to star in it.

“I tried to talk (husband TG Sheppard) into (being in the video),” Lang says with a laugh during a recent interview with Taste of Country. “I wanted him to be somebody that picked me up at the bar. But then I thought, ‘Nah, I want to tell the story.’”

And tell the story she did, starring as the high-heeled narrator of sorts in the music video premiering exclusively via Taste of Country. However, Lang is the first to admit that it took her awhile to fully understand the story she wanted to tell in the music video.

“It’s really a strange song,” explains Lang. “I had never really broken it down from the singer's perspective before I recorded it. It's really hard to describe what the song really is about, other than it's just a sexy song, but I just wanted to tell the story from an outsider, watching other people have issues with their love lives.”

Lang says the song also has a certain "girl power" element to it.

“I wanted everyone in it to be confident and almost like they are not needing love right now,” says Lang about the treatment for the video, which she filmed at Safari’s Brick Oven and Grill in the Nashville suburb of Hendersonville, Tenn. The location was the setting for one of Lang’s first dates with Sheppard.

The exclusive premiere of the music video for “What’s Love Got to Do With It” is yet another piece of the buildup surrounding the upcoming release of Lang’s new album Old Soul II, a project that has been on her heart for a long time.

“I've been recording it for a year and a half now,” says Lang, whose book I’m Not Going Anywhere arrived earlier this year. “I never know if I'm stepping a little too far over the edge. I know country fans will know these songs, but I don't want to ever push the envelope so much that I lose the connection with my country roots, because that's where I began. But I loved getting to stretch my wings a little bit and get outside the box, because great music is great music.”

She hopes the songs not only reaches her longtime fans, but new ones, too.

“My goal is to possibly educate some of the younger generation if they have not heard these songs, that they may hear a spark from me and then want to go backwards,” says Lang, whose previous singles have included covers of legendary hits such as “Take My Breath Away” and “Midnight Train to Georgia."

“I just love to honor music. I love to honor these classics and the people that came before us.”
