Jelly Roll is a "20-year overnight success" in country music, according to country-friendly rapper Yelawolf — who meant that he was grinding hard for two decades before he became Nashville's hottest new artist.

Born and raised in Antioch, Tenn., Jelly became good friends with Yelawolf, who spent parts of his childhood and most of his adult life living in Antioch, too.

Yelawolf Once Gave Jelly Roll a Brand New Truck

He said "I took him [Jelly Roll] on tour with me a few times, and let him open some random shows as well. He pulled up [to the show] in a Crown Vic, an old cop car, still with the spotlight on it with no license plate, no license, ridin' dirty."

"When I came back to Nashville, when Jelly was down bad, I gave him a brand-new Chevrolet Silverado when I was on tour so he could run his family around for Christmas," Yelawolf reveals. "That's my dog. He's been family for a long time."

How Did Jelly Roll and Yelawolf Meet?

Although the two lived nearby and rolled with some of the same people, Jelly Roll and Yelawolf didn't meet until a little later down the road when Shooter Jennings introduced the two to each other at Tree Sound Studios in Atlanta, Ga.

Yelawolf says he and Jelly Roll "just became fast friends," and that he "recorded Jelly's first singer/songwriter song. That might have sparked that for him."

"Something clicked in Jelly, obviously, and he rolled the dice and it worked," he continues. "It's been mind-blowing watching his growth and stardom. He deserves everything he's got."

Yelawolf is dropping a new record called 45 later this month which has some elements of country music and Americana in it. He has released a single from it already called "My Country."
