As summertime approaches, kids start to get creative with how to use their free time. Unfortunately, this experiment went tragically wrong and ended in the death of a 14-year-old Idaho boy.

The identity of this young man is not being released to the public quite yet. All we know so far is that the teenager is from Idaho Falls.

The accident happened on Tuesday afternoon. The boy was critically hit by a projectile from a homemade gun or cannon.

An article on eastidahonews.com says two teenage boys were powders and other materials to make the homemade explosive in a backyard shed. According to the Bonneville County Sheriffs Office, the boys were trying to make a homemade gun or cannon that would launch a small projectile. While they were trying to make the "gun" an accidental explosion caused a piece of wood to penetrate the victim's chest.

First aid and CPR were performed by the victim's mother and first responders, but the teenager ultimately died from his injury.

Please keep this young man's family and friends in your thoughts and prayers in the days to come and take a few minutes to sit down with your own kids and have a discussion with them about the dangers of making homemade explosives even if the intentions are innocent.

We'll keep you posted as this story develops and this young man's identity is released.
