A Caldwell teacher was arrested Sunday (02/19) night after a warrant was issued for her arrest.

According to a press release from the Caldwell Police Department on the afternoon of February 14, Lincoln Elementary School administrators informed the Caldwell Police School Resource Officer assigned to the school that they were concerned about several preschool-aged children being abused by their special education teacher, Ms. Kerry Black.

The abuse was witnessed by several aids assigned to the classroom between January 17, 2023, and February 10, 2023. The abuse witnessed was hitting, spanking, and forcefully turning their heads. After the reports, an investigation was started into these allegations, and the Caldwell School District placed Ms. Black on administrative leave pending their administrative investigation.

On the evening of February 19, 2023, an arrest warrant was issued by a Canyon County Magistrate for the immediate arrest of Ms. Black. The Ada County Sheriff's Office arrested her at her home without incident and booked her into the Ada County Jail. Ms. Black is being charged with five counts of Injury to a Child and five counts of Battery.

Dr. French, the Superintendent of the Caldwell School District, said, "our first priority at the Caldwell School District is to provide a safe learning environment for all students. We were made aware of the situation involving Ms. Black, which violated the expectation, and we immediately took action. Ms. Black was placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation and will not be returning to the classroom."

"When I first learned about this incident, I was in utter disbelief to hear that the most vulnerable population of students - our children with disabilities - were being abused by the very person who should have been protecting them. This type of behavior is outright repulsive and disheartening. Ms. Black's behavior in the classroom was abhorrent at best and inexcusable," said Rex Ingram, Caldwell Chief of Police.
