Idaho Has An Underwater Area 51 And It’s Awesome

Idaho is full of surprises.  Few would expect the U.S.’s top submarine outpost to be tucked away in the panhandle of landlocked Idaho, but it is.

This advanced facility has quite a very interesting history.  And right now it's at the bottom of a lake.

Before these underwater military vessels can be added to the naval fleet, each piece of state-of-the-art technology on board must be tested under open water conditions without venturing into the dangerous ocean territory. It’s a small-scale Area 51 that few people know about, but is an incredibly fascinating part of Idaho that serves a national purpose.

It's in Lake Pend Oreille which is Idaho's largest, deepest pool of water and gets very little action from people making it perfect for the military to do a little testing.

So if you're boating around, and somehow think you've spotted a top of the line multi-million dollar submarine.  You're not going crazy.  You may have.
