Important: Don’t Let This Virus Ruin Your Toilet In Idaho
What Idahoans Need to Know
If you haven't heard, Norovirus, also known as the stomach flu, is spreading across the United States with a significant surge in cases. That includes Idaho.
Norovirus Outbreak on the Rise
According to recent data from the CDC, the United States experienced 91 norovirus outbreaks during the first week of December. That may not seem like a big number, but it's an alarming increase compared to the average of 65 outbreaks during the same period over the past 12 years. States like California, Florida, and New York are among the most affected, reporting dozens of cases.
Idaho's Low Case Numbers Don't Mean Zero Risk
Idaho appears to have dodged a bullet, for now, from the brunt of this outbreak. Like anything else, norovirus spreads quickly in group settings, including schools, nursing homes, and restaurants. Symptoms such as sudden vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration can arise within hours, leaving little time to prepare.
How To Prevent Norovirus
Prevention is Idaho's best weapon against a potential spike in cases. Here's how you can protect yourself and your family:
- Wash your Hands Often. Soap and water are your best friends, but experts say hand sanitizers are less effective against Norovirus.
- Handle Food Properly: Wash produce, cook seafood thoroughly, and avoid preparing food for others if you feel unwell. 80 people got sick with the Norovirus after eating raw oysters at a food festival in California.
- Clean Surfaces: Regularly disinfect high-touch areas and wash linens or clothing that may have been contaminated.
Idaho's current low case numbers are a relief, but neighboring states are reporting higher outbreaks.
