Twin Falls County Fairgrounds Temporarily Bans Horse Stalling Over EHV-1

In a recent social media announcement, Twin Falls County Fairgrounds shared that no stabling of horses is allowed at this time because of concerns over the EHV-1 virus. The temporary ban is in place “for the safety of all horses and visitors.” They didn't post an estimated date that stabling can resume, which is common with disease prevention steps, since conditions can be hard to predict.

What Is EHV-1 and Why It Matters

EHV-1, or Equine Herpesvirus-1, is a contagious virus that spreads between horses through close contact, shared equipment, or contaminated environments. It can cause respiratory illness, pregnancy loss in mares, and sometimes a deadly neurologic condition called EHM. That is why stables and fairgrounds are quick to tighten rules when there is increased concern about possible exposure.

Can EHV-1 Spread to People?

According to federal animal health officials, equine herpesviruses, including EHV-1, do not pose a risk to people. This is considered an animal health issue rather than a human health threat.

Temporary, Precautionary Ban

I contacted Management at Twin Falls County Fairgrounds and confirmed that the stall ban is temporary and purely precautionary. While there is no exact reopening date yet, I was informed that they intend to allow stalling again as soon as preventive stall cleaning is complete.

No Events Canceled Due to the Stalling Ban at Twin Falls County Fairgrounds

The safety measures will not affect upcoming events at the fairgrounds, including the Annual Christmas in the Nighttime Sky event, which will be hosted there for the first time this year on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
