The Deadliest Time To Be On Idaho Roads Is Coming

We're about to see millions of travelers take to the roads this Memorial Day weekend, and starting Monday, things will be a little more dangerous when the "100 Deadliest Days" begin.

Why Is It Called The "100 Deadliest Days?"

The "100 Deadliest Days" begins on Memorial Day and runs through Labor Day. According to the Idaho Transportation Department and Idaho Office of Highway Safety, there is a "spike in fatal and serious injury crashes across the state" during the 100 days.

As you might imagine, this is due to a variety of factors, including speeding, drunk driving, but also, there are more people on the road during this time. Imagine how many young drivers are out of school when they normally would be in class, or how many people will be hitting the roads, looking for a good time.

If there are any doubts about how deadly this 100-day stretch could be, the stats reveal how bad it can be.

Last summer, officials reported that 82 people died during last year's "100 Deadliest Days," and 2023 was the "deadliest year for traffic crashes in over a decade."

In 2024, there were 9 deaths in Ada County and Canyon County reported 8 deaths according to the Idaho Transportation Department.

If you have young drivers, now would be the time to remind them about the importance of driving the speed limit, not driving impaired, and leaving early if they have to be somewhere on time to avoid rushing to be somewhere, like their summer job.
