Boise State’s Khalil Shakir Signs Exciting New Deal

The debate on whether student athletes should be paid or not has rolled on for decades. In 2015, John Oliver dedicated a lengthy segment on Last Week tonight arguing that collegiate athletes should receive compensation for playing sports. A major point of his argument being that a university, its coaches, and sponsors all get to make money off these athletes, while the athletes doing the work don’t see a dime. "No one is saying that they need to be paid millions...but to pay everyone zero when the kid selling their jersey at the campus bookstore gets ten dollars an hour seems a little bit strange.

Finally, after years of trying to figure out if and how players should be compensated, the agreement was made that collegiate athletes would not be paid by universities for playing, however they would now have the ability to accept endorsements and pay for use of their name, image, and likeness. Referred commonly as NIL deals, Boise State’s Khalil Shakir has announced his first NIL deal.

On Sunday the Bronco’s wide receiver took to his Instagram to announce his partnership with Pro Image Sports. Shakir stopped by the Boise Towne Square Mall location encouraging followers and fans to check out the store. The video, short and sweet, proved he’s a natural at this endorsement stuff.
