Imagine living each day under the looming shadow of a major volcano, knowing it could erupt at any moment, threatening to obliterate us and everything we love. There are plenty of movies/shows dealing with this scenario, but the truth is that it's a legitimate concern... even three hours away from Boise.

"Is a volcanic eruption THAT bad?"

It's not something people probably think about when they arrive in Idaho or even Boise, but they're out there. As a matter of fact, some of us might be shocked to learn that there are several volcanoes in Idaho including Craters of the Moon, Kings Bowl, Wapi, Cerro Grande, Black Butte Crater lava field, Hells Half Acre, North and South Robbers.

But what happens if a volcano decides to erupt just three hours from Boise... what would happen?

We're talking about molten rock and unlike the movies, you can't really "sink" in lava or even submerge items in it. Rather, the molten rock just overtakes anything in its path and if you were to fall into a "pool" of lava, it'd be like falling onto a very hot water bed.

You might not sink, but you'll burn up pretty quickly.

According to the National Park Service, lava can reach a staggering 2,1000 degrees Fahrenheit; just imagine if that were to happen right in our own backyard.

Here's what we know about when the next volcanic eruption will happen and how it will affect Boise.
