January is National Personal Self-Defense Awareness Month, so we went to the experts to get some tips! Also, we smelled pepper spray.

Chief Calley and his team at Eagle PD were kind enough to walk us through some simple steps you can take to make sure you're protected. Some of their tips are pretty standard and things we should all know:

  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Park your car until a lit area

However, some other advice isn't so common sense, even though it should be. Chief Calley implored us to stay off our cell phones while walking around. The more you're looking at your phone, the less aware you are of what's going on around you, which of course to lead to a bad situation.

To wrap things up, Eagle PD encourages us to know how to use whatever self-defense tools we choose to implement, from pepper spray to a personal firearm. Protip: Don't smell the pepper spray. It is POWERFUL stuff that is not to be toyed with.

If you would like to get more information on self-defense and how you can keep yourself safe, you can check out the Eagle Police Department's Facebook page.
