On July 1, 2018, Officer Kyle Mikowski with the Meridian Police Department attempted to arrest 33-year-old Daniel Norris during a traffic stop for a felony warrant. The suspect took off on foot, and according to KTVB, shot Officer Mikowski twice in the legs, piercing both his calves.

Mikowski returned fire and fatally shot the suspect. Despite being injured, the officer returned to work just three months later. In an interview with KTVB, Mikowski said the incident "raised some concerns mentally with the job [...] it's something that you have to keep fighting through, and get your confidence back and just try to be who you were prior to this, and it's been going pretty well so far."

For his bravery in that extremely dangerous situation, Officer Mikowski will be awarded the 'Idaho Medal of Honor' in a ceremony at the Idaho Capitol on Wednesday, May 15 at 2 p.m.

Thank you, Officer Mikowski, for your heroism and your willingness to sacrifice it all for the safety of our community!
