If I find myself near Shoshone, Idaho, I will make this stop. If you drive through southern Idaho on Highway 75, make sure that when you see the sign for "Idaho's Mammoth Cave & Shoshone Bird Museum of Natural History," follow the signs eight miles north of Shoshone.

The cave is one of the largest volcanic caves in the world that is open to the public. It is a great destination, particularly when trying to escape the summer heat with its 40-degree subterranean temperature. So, it is advisable to bring a light jacket.

Also, when at the cave, you can enjoy the Shoshone Bird Museum of Natural History and the Richard Arthur Olsen Museum of Natural History.

The Shoshone Bird Museum of Natural History is among the largest privately-owned collections located in the Northwest. They have not invested in large and expensive buildings but rather focused on enhancing the exhibits inside the museum. The museum features a wide variety of birds and other animals from around the world, including both native and exotic species. Visitors can also enjoy viewing fish and dinosaur fossils, artifacts, and anthropology collections, as well as rocks and minerals.

The Richard Arthur Olsen Museum of Natural History opened in June 2022.

The Richard Arthur Olsen Museum of Natural History is an Idaho landmark that was founded and curated by the late Richard Arthur Olsen, who passed away in 2019. Visitors to the museum can gain a deep understanding and appreciation of different periods throughout history.
