A bat discovered in the backyard of a West Boise home last month just tested positive for rabies.

Fortunately nobody's had contact with this bat.  Health officials are saying the family's cat has been vaccinated for rabies and will stay inside for the next 45 days while the family monitors the cat.

Rabid bats have been found from Bown Crossing to Meridian to the North End of Ada County.  People should take precautions and avoid touching or picking up these animals.

On average, 10% of bats found in Idaho have rabies.  Without early detection, rabies has a near 100% fatality rate with humans and animals.
