Ah, summertime. A time for your kids to be kids, play outside, have fun with their friends, and fall behind on their learning. Wait, what? Unfortunately, for many students that live in the Treasure Valley, that's the reality. Low-income students are hit the hardest in the concept known as Summer Learning Loss --reading achievement regression by more than two months.

"63 percent of low-income first graders were reading at grade level in the spring of 2013. When they returned in the fall as second graders, only 41 percent were reading at grade level."

Luckily there is something that can curve that learning loss. There was a study done in the Journal of Education for Students Places at Risk, that showed that if students read four to five books over the summer, it can potentially prevent a decline in reading achievement from Spring to Fall.

So United Way of Treasure Valley is spearheading a huge book drive for kids right here in our community and throughout Idaho. From now until April 13th, you can take new and gently used children's books to over 100 dropoff locations in the Treasure Valley and surrounding counties (Gen, Valley, Payette, Oregon).
