Roughly 550 are living with HIV in the Boise and Twin Falls metro areas.Charlie Sheen made his big announcement on the Today Show this morning that he is HIV positive. He revealed to Matt Lauer that he has known about the diagnosis for the past 4 years and has spent upwards of $10 million to keep it a secret.

As I started digging, I quickly realized that there are more people struggling with HIV and AIDS than I ever understood. 1.2 million people are living with HIV in the United States and 12.8% of those infected are unaware they have the disease according to the CDC. It's a secret condition that over 550 people in our area are battling. Fortunately with education, medical advancements, and more available resources people with HIV are living longer and better lives. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare provides testing, counseling, and prevention programs to those affected by HIV and AIDs.

Charlie Sheen said some of the early warning signs he experienced were a series of crushing headaches and sweating profusely. Other warning signs include

  • fevers
  • soar throat
  • muscle and joint pain
  • swollen lymph nodes
  • skin rashes
