Two Kids Hospitalized as CDH Probes Raw Milk Illnesses in Ada County
Central District Health Investigating Serious Ada County Illnesses Linked to Raw Milk
Central District Health has issued a press release saying they are investigating reports of serious illness in nine Ada County residents that appear to be associated with raw milk consumption. Two children are among those who have been hospitalized with serious complications.
Shiga Toxin–Producing E. coli Confirmed in Several Cases
According to CDH, several illnesses have been laboratory confirmed as Shiga toxin–producing Escherichia coli (STEC). CDH says STEC can cause severe illness, including bloody diarrhea and vomiting, and may lead to serious complications. Children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable.
Two Children Hospitalized With Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome
CDH also says two children are hospitalized with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a rare but serious complication of E. coli infection that can lead to kidney failure and long-term health problems.
R Bar H Raw Milk Products Named as Common Link
The source is still being investigated. CDH says all cases reported consuming raw cow milk products from R Bar H Dairy. The dairy has pulled all products from stores and voluntarily suspended production while the investigation continues.
What To Do If You Bought Raw Milk: Discard Product and Watch for Symptoms
If you bought products from R Bar H, CHD recommends you avoid consumption and discard any remaining product. Anyone who has consumed raw milk and develops symptoms such as severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, or vomiting should seek medical care and report the illness to their local health district.

Health Officials Warn Against Raw Milk
Raw milk is dairy milk from a cow, goat, or other animal that has not been pasteurized. Pasteurization uses heat to kill harmful germs, including E. coli, Listeria, and Salmonella. If you choose to consume raw milk, CDH says it’s important to keep it cold to reduce bacterial growth. CDH recommends refrigerating it quickly after purchase, keep it at a consistent cold temperature, and look out for signs of spoilage. You can find more information in the presser released by Central District Health.
Why Some People Still Drink Raw Milk
Raw milk has a loyal following. Some people say they prefer the taste and texture and describe it as richer or creamier. Others are down with the idea that it’s less processed or aligns with a more natural approach to food. You’ll also hear people talk about perceived health benefits, like improved digestion or stronger immunity.
For some buyers, it’s also about supporting local farms and feeling a closer connection to where their food comes from.
