Edwin McCain stopped by The Bobby Bones Show to talk about his career, perform his chart topping hits, and how apps like TikTok and Cameo have brought his career back to the forefront again.
He confessed that everything about his career is an accident. Darius Rucker and Hootie and The Blowfish supported McCain's career. Hootie and The Blowfish at the time shared that they were going to bring McCain with them to their label, and the label was happy to include him. McCain said his sound and success was all about being at the right place and right time. Because when he released his songs, everyone was tired of the "grunge" sound and looking for something new.
Fast forward several years to now, McCain loves to perform on the app Cameo for his fans. It costs $100 for him to make a video, but he will perform an entire song for those that buy a video from him. He's done so well with the performances that he has a 5-star rating on Cameo. Though, McCain admits getting some bad reviews in the beginning because he didn't know what he was doing at first. Valentine's Day was like the Super Bowl for him because so many people were buying videos requesting him to play his massive love song hit "I'll Be." Another app that's really changed things for McCain in recent months is TikTok. He's been dueting fans and other artists covering him alike. It was McCain dueting on TikTok that actually made Bobby Bones see that he was still performing enough to come into The Bobby Bones Show studio.
Before performing "I'll Be," McCain shared the story behind one of the famous lyrics in the line, "love suicide." He confessed he was really good at screwing up relationships at the time that he wrote this song. Everyone that worked with him tried to get him to remove that specific line of the song, but he wouldn't let them. He even added that Hilary Duff covered the song and removed the "love suicide" lyric and he was able to sue her because of it. One of his more recent projects, McCain did a collaboration with Lee Brice called "Story To Tell (Little Bird)." The latest collaboration has made McCain consider doing a record again so his kids can see him perform. But McCain added that he's not sure his fans want to hear new music.
