It's a new year and many of us are trying to find ways to live healthier lives. That might include working out, eating healthier, and/or even focusing on ways to improve our mental health.

Food Changes Are Coming To Idaho

As our knowledge and technology continue to expand, we continue to learn new information about the things we interact with every day. Most of us have seen different warnings about plastics in our food or about the dangers of sleeping with a charging cell phone under your pillow.

Now, the Food & Drug Administration is stepping in to put a stop to an ingredient that's in a lot of the food we enjoy.

According to a press release, the FDA announced that they will be "revoking the authorization for the use of FD&C Red No. 3 as a matter of law."

What Is Red Dye 3/FD&C Red No. 3?

According to the FDA, FD&C Red No. 3 "is a synthetic food dye that gives foods and drinks a bright, cherry-red color."

Studies were reportedly presented to the FDA showing that high levels of exposure to FD&C Red No. 3 "showed cancer in laboratory male rats" due to a "rat-specific hormonal mechanism."

However, the FDA also reported that "claims that the use of FD&C Red No. 3 in food and in ingested drugs puts people at risk are not supported by the available scientific information."

Either way, the FDA says that companies who are using the dye "in food and indigested drugs will have until January 15, 2027, or January 2018, respectively, to reformulate their products."
