A popular gluten-free breakfast item is being recalled after a press release from the Food & Drug Administration revealed the snack is not gluten-free.

While there are many different perceptions about gluten, there are a lot of people who have an allergy to gluten which can cause some serious problems for them.

"What exactly is gluten?"

For us to be able to explain what gluten is, we had to turn to the Harvard School of Public Health. Don't worry - we'll keep it "simple."

According to Harvard, gluten is a protein and can be found in grains like wheat, barley, and rye. Harvard School of Public Health describes gluten as being a "binder" to foods that add a "stretchy quality." The folks at Harvard use pizza dough as an example: without gluten, the dough would rip and tear easily.

This explains why some feel that gluten-free foods taste vastly different (they might say worse) than foods with gluten.

Unfortunately, the folks at Harvard say if you have a wheat allergy, celiac disease, Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH), or gluten-sensitive enteropathy (GSE)/gluten intolerance, consuming foods containing wheat, barley, and rye (yes, that includes beer) can cause some serious issues.

You can read more about the effects of gluten on the body and the argument for the benefits from Harvard here. But, which snack is being recalled?

A gluten-free snack isn't gluten-free
