Massachusetts Police Officer Matt Lima was called to a Stop & Shop grocery store just before the Christmas holiday.
Store security shared that two women were stopped as they left the store. The security noticed that they didn't scan everything they put in their bags at a self-checkout register. The women had two small children with them during the incident.
Lima took one of the women aside so they could discuss what happened without the kids hearing. The woman explained that the family with the children was dealing with some hardships and the food they had taken was Christmas dinner for the kids.
Lima looked at the receipt noting that it was just food, and felt that the family was in need. So he gave them a notice not to trespass and did not press charges. But before letting them leave, he bought them a $250 gift card so they could buy their groceries at a different store.
