New Jersey police officers got a call about a dog that got loose and was stuck neck-deep in the mud.

They responded to the dog in distress and found Akela, a gray boxer/mastiff, who was struggling in the water. Officer John Kuligowski found a nearby kayak and paddled out to Akela. Video footage posted on the Washington Township Police Department's Facebook page shows Kuligowski trying to position the kayak next to Akela and pull her to safety. While he was unable to pull her aboard, he eventually guided her to shore. Chief Thomas Cicerelle and officer Dallas Overko provided some additional help during the rescue.

Akela was unharmed and even posed for some photos with her rescuers after they all made it back to shore.
