The winter months in Boise can be brutal and for those without a place to go, it can be one of the most brutal times of the year. Thankfully, officials in Boise understand this are and offering solutions around town.
It Doesn't Take Much To Experience Hypothermia
It's no secret that there is large homeless population in Boise and imagine being one of these people during a cold winter night. Now, to many of us "cold" can mean a variety of things.
For some people, "cold" is anything below 20 degrees Fahrenheit while others might say "cold" is any temperature around the freezing point of 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
According to the National Weather Service, it doesn't take much for the human body to reach hypothermia which they say can "occur with temperatures between 30 and 50 degrees" with those in wet clothes at a higher risk.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, the human body reaches stage 1 hypothermia when body temperature reaches between 89.6 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cold Boise Nights Are Ahead
For those without a place to stay for the night, it's not just the cold that becomes a challenge, both snow and rain can present their own issues. Finding a dry place to call it a night while also trying to stay warm can feel like a life or death situation for some people.
In Boise, you could argue that it's only going to get colder and some are even wondering if we'll experience another brutal winter with more snow than we're used to on the way.
