According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Memorial Day is to honor military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. A number of events around the Treasure Valley help us remember and honor the sacrifices made by our veterans.

The Idaho State Veterans Cemetery has a very special event on Saturday at 9am. They will be unveiling a new bronze statue of two life sized veterans titled "I've Got Your Back". The statues was primarily created by Idaho artist Benjamin Victor, with help from others. Gov. Brad Little, former Gov. Dirk Kempthorne and other dignitaries will speak at the unveiling. Then on Monday at 10am at The Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, flags will be placed throughout the cemetery by the Young Marines. There will also be flyovers by the Idaho Air National Guard's 124th Fighter Wing. Then at 11:11am A Warhawk Air Museum Warbird flight will take place followed by a TAPS performance by a member of Bugles Across America and a bagpipe lament by a member of the Boise Highlanders.

According to KTVB, starting on Saturday through the weekend Boise Parks and Recreation will be at Morris Hill Cemetery at 317 N. Latah Street to assist in located and identifying grave locations. At 11:45 on Memorial Day Morris Hill will start it's reenactment. Pioneer Cemetery on Warm Springs will be open to the public but not staffed and Fort Boise Military Reserve Cemetery on N. Mountain Cove Rd will also be open to the public and has a reenactment on Memorial Day Scheduled for 12:45.

Nampa is celebrating at 10am on Memorial day at Veteran's Loop in Kohlerlawn Cemetery. Rev. Bill Roscoe, President of the Boise Rescue Mission Ministries will be speaking.

In Meridian the Memorial Day honors will be at Julius M. Kleiner Park on Records Avenue at 11am. All of the names of Meridian's 62 fallen heroes are engraved on the Rock of Honor Memorial and will be read aloud. Followed by Vintage planes from the Warhawk Air Museum doing a flyover. Meridian City Councilman Treg Bernt will speak. This event will also pay a special tribute this year to police and firefighters, first responders, and health care workers.
