Are Idaho Drivers Really This Bad At Winter Driving?
Last Thursday was one for the books, wasn't it? Old Man Winter brought the Treasure Valley to its knees when Bosie was struck with high winds, snow, and cold temperatures.
You'd think we'd be used to it by now, right?
"Not so fast..."
Maybe it's because we haven't had as many encounters with snow this winter as we normally do... or, maybe something was in the air that Thursday. Whatever it was, it felt like Boise drivers lost their winter-driving mojo.
While icy and slick conditions forced the Boise connector to shut down for multiple hours, there were traffic accidents throughout the Treasure Valley and even pile-ups.
As a matter of fact, the Ada County Sheriff's Office shared some interesting numbers that has some people scratching their heads.
"From 1 p.m. to 4 p.n., Ada County Dispatch received reports of the following:
- Injury Collisions: 3
- Non-Injury Collisions: 35
- Slide-Offs: 8"
Those are some pretty serious numbers and that's just what the Ada County Sheriff's Office received. ACSO even reported 3 hit-and-runs taking place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"Slicker than frozen camel snot on an ice rink go slow or just don’t go thanks ACSD," one comment read on their Facebook page.
What can we do going forward?
Let's just chalk that day up as a "bad day." Things happen and it's quite possible we were all caught off-guard... it happens, right?
Hopefully, Thursday will remind some of us of the important winter driving tips we seemingly forgot that day:
- Approach your turns slowly
- Leave early and drive at slower speeds
- Turn your lights on
- Brake early
Drive safely!
