The Beginning Of The End Of Soda And Candy In Idaho
Big changes are coming for Idahoans who have a sweet tooth. Idaho legislation is waiting for Governor Brad Little to sign a bill that will make getting soda and even candy a little more difficult to get in Idaho.
Is This The End Of Soda In Idaho?
Not necessarily, but it could be for a lot of people. Idaho lawmakers are currently waiting for Governor Brad Little to sign off on a bill that would officially put a stop to SNAP recipients being able to purchase soda and candy.
"This legislation would require the Idaho Department of Health & Welfare to request a waiver from the federal government to be able to exclude candy and soda from SNAP eligible foods," the bill's statement of purpose reads.
"Food stamps are currently fueling the junk food epidemic, with soda ranking as the number one commodity bought with food stamps."
According to the American Diabetes Association, roughly 494,400 adults in Idaho, or 33.2%, were obese in 2024, while 9% of the population was diagnosed with diabetes.
There's no question that that's not good, but how are you feeling about the change? Should people receiving money from the government be told what to eat and what not to eat?
Either way, the bill is waiting to be signed by Governor Little, and judging by the wording of the statement of purpose, it sounds like it's going to get that signature.
"Banning soda and candy from food stamps would prioritize health and nutrition while also reducing taxpayers’ out-of-control Medicaid costs. Make Idaho Healthy Again!"
