Cheese is one of the most addictive foods out there. It's used in everything from burgers to salads and can be found in several cuisines.

Unfortunately, a popular cheese in Salt Lake City is being recalled for a deadly reason according to the Food Drug & Administration.

A Popular Cheese Is Contaminated

According to the FDA, a popular Venezuelan cheese is being recalled due to being potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can be fatal to some.

Listeria monocytogenes is "a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems" according to the FDA.

If you consider yourself "healthy", you might experience "high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea." Women who are pregnant are at risk of experiencing a miscarriage or stillbirths if infected with Listeria.

Thankfully, it doesn't appear anyone has been infected yet and it's likely due to the company, Tama Corporation of Doral FL's swift response.

"We demand rigorous quality controls from our products suppliers," they said on the FDA's website.

"In this regard, we were informed by the co-packer of our QUESO DE MANO PAISA, that a batch of 18 cases distributed in Salt Lake City, Utah, was suspicious of Listeria monocytogenes contamination..."

The cheese, Queso de Mano Paisa, was only sold at Rancho Markets stores in Utah and Tama Corporation of Doral FL says they contacted Rancho Markets right away when they learned of the contamination.

The FDA says that the contaminated product you need to look for is in the 24-ounce package with a best-by date of May 16, 2024.
