Time to love on your pups! Today is national Mutt Day also known as National Mixed Breed Dog Day (you know so your pup doesn't get offended being called a mutt).

The US has been celebrating this day for 15 years. Colleen Paige a Celebrity PEt and Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate started the holiday in 2005. It is celebrated twice a year today, July 31st and December 2nd. The day was created not only to show extra appreciation for you furry family members but also to raise awareness about mixed breed dogs and adoption to save these sweeties.

Mixed breed dogs tend to be healthier, better behaved, they live longer and are just as able to perform the duties of pure bred dogs - such as bomb and drug sniffing, search and rescue and guiding the blind. There are millions of loving and healthy mixed breed dogs sitting in shelters, who are desperately searching for a new home. If you have more room in your home and heart, please visit your local shelter and find a new friend! If you want another way to help celebrate today, donating $5 or more to an animal shelter is a great way to.

My sweet pup Ani, nickname Punkin, is a mix of -best guess a golden and a boarder collie- She was found hiding under a truck, hungry and abused in a reservation in southern Oregon. I adopted her from the Klamath Falls Shelter 9 years ago and she is the best dog I have ever had. So smart and she is never bad, it's like she's so grateful she got rescued that she doesn't want to misbehave and disappoint me.
