First and foremost, this is a good thing and something that all families should do. Heck, you might already do this with your family like some of us do. It's not just phones either!

Some kids are big into iPads, video games, and just being in front of screens in general. This weekend, however, that all changes.

The City of Meridian Says "Unplug and Be Outside!"

Sure, you don't have to turn your phone off or unplug anything, but you should.

According to the National Library of Medicine, excessive screen time has several negative effects on children, including impacting language development, hindering emotional and social growth, and even leading to other bad habits. Those might include an increased risk of obesity, sleep disorders, depression, and anxiety.

Luckily, the City of Meridian is doing something about it that can hopefully inspire families to make positive changes going forward.

The City of Meridian is hosting 'Unplug and Be Outside' this Saturday at Kleiner Park from 10 AM to 2 PM.

"Throughout the day, you’ll have the opportunity to try your hand at various outdoor activities, including fishing, disc golf, and pickleball," the page for the event says.

"These hands-on introductions will give you the chance to explore new hobbies and activities."

It sounds like a great way to introduce your kids to different ways for them to avoid being "bored" - something no parent likes hearing. Various organizations will also be in attendance, providing important information on how families can stay active.
