Some of the best things Idaho has to offer can be found in the great outdoors. There are plenty of trails to explore, hikes to conquer, camping trips to be had, and of course... fishing.

And, if you plan on fishing in Idaho in the future... you're about to get some really good news.

The Best It's Been In 7 Years...

Some might find this hard to believe but fishing in Idaho is about to be as good as it has been in seven years. According to Idaho Fish & Game, annual steelhead returns are looking pretty darn good... and it's only going to get better:

At roughly 97,000 so far, this year’s steelhead return over Lower Granite Dam marks the highest return since 2016, and Anadromous Fisheries Coordinator Chris Sullivan thinks we could see this year’s return surpass that mark.

Idaho Fish & Game says that by this time of year, fish should be well distributed in rivers from "Lewiston, Riggins, Salmon, and Challis." IDFG says that it'll give anglers a chance to catch fish "when they're fresh from the ocean."

Apparently, this means you could be in for a bigger catch this go around.

“Over 80% of the steelhead that have crossed Lower Granite Dam this year have been fish that spent two years in the ocean. This should result in anglers catching bigger fish this fall and next spring,” Anadromous Fisheries Coordinator Chris Sullivan said.

Now, it is possible that the numbers look so good because they were so low back in 2017. Either way, this is great news for Idaho anglers and a good reason to fetch some fish.
