If there's one thing that some of us don't mess with, it's snakes. And look, I get it, some people collect them as pets, and I suppose that's cool if that's your thing. But, what about snakes you don't expect to encounter while taking in the great Idaho outdoors? You know, like when you're taking a dip in the water and one creeps up on you like you're the next horror movie victim.

Does Idaho Have A Lot Of Snakes?

A state with a river literally called "Snake River" surely has a lot of snakes, right? The truth is that Idaho doesn't have as many species of snakes as other states. According to World Population Review, Idaho is home to 12 different species of snakes, including the garter, gopher, and North American racer snakes.

If that sounds like a lot, imagine living in Texas, where there are reportedly 68 different species of snakes and more if you count the subspecies. All of that being said, Idaho still has some spots where you'll find more snakes in one place than some of us might be comfortable with, especially in our lakes.

Out of curiosity, we wanted to know which lakes in Idaho are the most infested with snakes. In our search, we came across a few lakes that are reportedly the most infested with snakes, but one kept coming up above the rest: Lake Couer d'Alene.

According to World Atlas, Lake Couer d'Alene is one of the most snake-infested lakes in Idaho, with the most common being the common garter snake and the terrestrial garter snake. They're not venomous, but they will bite you, and if you need a little bit more nightmare fuel with that, garter snakes give birth to live baby snakes, so you'll likely see those little guys floating around.

Other lakes getting the snake-infested honorable mention include Boise Cascade Lake and Magic Reservoir.
