The West Ada School District announced in January that they were on the hunt for a new Superintendent because the current one, Dr. Mary Ann Ranells is retiring after this school year. What a crazy year to end on. After months of searching and interviewing the West Ada School District Board of Trustees announced that Dr. Derek Bub will be the new superintendent.

A press release from West Ada School District had this to say, “We are pleased to welcome Dr. Bub as our next superintendent,” said Board Chair Amy Johnson. “It was a rigorous and extensive hiring process and we are extremely pleased with the result.”

"I am extremely thankful to our Board of Trustees and the ISBA for their hard work and dedication to our school district throughout this process," said Dr. Bub. "I am incredibly honored to lead and serve West Ada School District in partnership with our wonderful community, spectacular teachers and staff, and amazing students."

A little on Dr. Derek Bubs background. According to the press release, he has been in the West Ada School District since 2017 and most recently was the Principal at Centennial High School since 2019. He has been in education long before coming to Idaho. He also served as the Principal in the Bonita High School in La Verne, California, the Assistant Principal of Educational Services at Etiwanda High School in Ontario, California and was the Assistant Principal, Athletic Director, Head Varsity Football Coach, and Mathematics Teacher for Chino Hills High School in California.

He is well educated too with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, a Master’s degree in Secondary Curriculum and Instruction. If that isn't enough Dr. Derek Bub also holds a Superintendent Certificate in Organizational Leadership, and recently completed his Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership. I would say he is well qualified indeed. I am also saying that as a parent with a student in West Ada School District.

Soon to be Superintendent Dr. Bub says he is looking forward to maintaining a strong focus on student learning, and engaging with all stakeholders to carry out the district mission of “Preparing Today’s Students for Tomorrows Challenges”, while collaboratively identifying areas of continual improvement. Dr. Ranells will continue as Superintendent of Schools through June 30, 2021. Dr. Bub will begin his new post on July 1, 2021.
